Five tips for visiting your loved one in a Columbus assisted living facility
January 20, 2018Tips from your Columbus senior living authority: Three ways to tell it’s time for a senior loved one to stop driving
March 20, 2018For seniors, few things are as scary as memory loss. It can be as simple as repeatedly losing your car keys to forgetting a common word or phrase, but there are ways to improve your memory.
Memory loss isn’t something to brush off and there are things you can do to help – no matter your age. Nothing is for certain and scientists are continuously learning more about memory and our brains. If you are experiencing memory loss, please talk to your doctor about it.
And in the meantime, try these four things that could help prevent memory loss. Read on:
Stay active – socially, physically and mentally
One of the best things you can do to try and prevent memory loss is to stay active. Do something physical every day – take a walk, go for a swim, try yoga. You also need to stay mentally active, so take up a new hobby like the daily crossword, putting together a puzzle, play a game with a friend or partner or read a book. You also need to stay socially active, which can help with depression, stress and loneliness. So, join a club or volunteer. Go to lunch with a friend. Chat with your grandchildren via text or an app like FaceTime.
Get enough sleep
A lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your life and your memory, so make sure you are getting enough. You probably need 7-9 hours of sleep a night, so learn to make adequate rest and good sleep a priority. If you use a phone, tablet or computer, it’s probably wise to switch it off a few hours before bedtime so you can relax.
Organize and declutter
If you struggle to find important papers or items, you might need to spend some time organizing and decluttering your home. A paper planner is also a good idea, to keep track of doctor visits, appointments and special days. Sometimes, writing something down helps us remember it better than entering it into an electronic calendar. A running to-do list is also a good idea if you have trouble remembering daily tasks. If you need help with organizing or decluttering, don’t be afraid to ask someone to assist you.
Eat well
A healthy, balanced diet can help you have a better brain. It’s true! And even better, there are some superfoods that can also help with memory loss. Apples, blackberries, walnuts, spinach, salmon and honey are all brain-boosting foods, so eat up.
