Columbus Christmas traditions: Celebrate with your family at Abbington Assisted Living
December 20, 2017Four things you can do to help prevent memory loss
February 20, 2018Visiting a loved one in a Columbus assisted living facility can be difficult. You might not know when to come or what to talk about.
However, it is very important to visit and keep up the relationship with your loved one in a Columbus assisted living facility, to maintain family ties and keep your relative from getting lonely and sad.
At Abbington Assisted Living, we are sharing some tips on how to visit your loved one in a Columbus assisted living facility, so the time spent is happy and fun for everyone. Read on:
Time
You don’t have to devote a whole day to a visit. An hour or two is more than enough. Schedule the time and treat it like you would any other appointment. Sometimes, it helps to set a regular time to visit, like Sunday mornings or Friday afternoons. Your loved one will know to expect you and you can get into a routine.
If you can’t make a visit, be sure to let your loved one or his or her caregivers know. We know things come up.
Plan
Before your visit, do a little homework. We’re not giving you a huge assignment, so don’t stress. Maybe bring a book or photo album to share. Make a list of things to tell your loved one, like your child scoring a big soccer goal or your new duties at work. Don’t forget to ask questions of your loved one, too. A positive attitude helps. And a little patience goes a long way.
Bring others on your visit to a Columbus assisted living facility
Ask your spouse, siblings or children to come with you. A lively visit will brighten the spirits of your loved one, make the time go faster and give everyone something to talk about. Also, it is a good bonding activity for all and you might make some new, wonderful memories.
Walkabout
Physical activity, if your loved one is able, is a great bonding experience. A stroll around the property – inside or out – can open the door to some quality conversations and make everyone feel better. After all, a little fresh air does everyone good!
Bring a treat
If your loved one has a favorite candy bar or likes having her nails painted, bring what you need to make him or her happy. Do they love to read but can’t anymore? Bring a book and each visit read a chapter out loud. It’s a loving thing to remember someone’s likes and hobbies.
