7 Winter Safety Tips for Seniors
January 4, 2017Valentine’s Day at Abbington
February 6, 2017While suffering from depression is not a normal part of aging, the triggers associated with depression increase as we age. Illness, loss of a spouse, aches and pains, can all contribute to depression. So, it is not uncommon for an older adult to suffer from the condition. It is important for caregivers to know what to look for in order to get help.
The Elderly are at a Higher Risk
For example, it is known that a person being treated for one major illness is more likely to have depression, and being treated for more than one illness increases those chances even more. So, consider that most seniors are on medication for one or more conditions and it only makes sense that they are at a higher risk of developing the condition.
There are many symptoms of depression but they can often be missed or explained away as a normal part of aging. However, treatment and changes in lifestyle can go a long way in getting back to a better, happier life.
Isolation, loneliness, fatigue, sleeplessness, irritability, and pain are all symptoms of depression. And, while depression is a condition that requires treatment, residents at Abbington benefit from all that assisted living can provide. The loss of a spouse and children not living nearby can cause an older adult to feel isolated. And, while the move to assisted living can be a temporary disruption, it is a step toward more socialization. Exercise helps diminish feelings of depression, and Abbington offers the opportunity to get some exercise daily. Lack of purpose often affects those suffering from depression, which is why we offer so many activities for our residents. It gives them a reason to get up and get going in the morning.
Probably, our most important task at Abbington is to monitor our residents every day. With that closeness and attention to their habits, we can watch their behavior patterns and if we notice symptoms that look like depression, we can alert family members and medical staff and get them the help they need.
