How to show some love to the amazing caregivers in your life
February 26, 2025April is Stress Awareness Month and like most adults, senior citizens aren’t immune to its effects.
So, what can you do about seniors and stress? During Stress Awareness Month, we are sharing some tips and tricks to consider.
Studies have shown that older Americans can be better at handling stress than younger ones, and that’s something that researchers attribute to experience, resiliency and the wisdom that comes with age.
However, that doesn’t mean that older adults are immune to the health risks that stress can bring – especially chronic stress. Stress, and the elevated cortisol it brings, can impact many facets of life for older Americans, including heart issues, memory problems and poor sleep – to name a few.
For older adults, chronic stress factors can include things like financial insecurity, grief, loneliness or social isolation, life changes like retirement or a move, and cognitive impairment.
However, there are some things you can do to combat chronic stress – and improve your overall quality of life – and Stress Awareness Month is a great time to start!
Here are some stress relief tips:
1. Exercise. Even a brief walk or some stretches can improve your physical health – especially if you do them regularly. It doesn’t have to be intense, just taking a few laps around your house can help!
2. Nutrition. You are what you eat, so if you are eating unhealthy foods, you will likely feel bad. Including vegetables, fruits and things like Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish) can help.
3. Sleep. Anyone who has struggled with poor sleep knows it impacts your physical and mental health. Prioritizing good sleep can have lasting benefits.
4. Social time. Many older Americans report that they are lonely or isolated, and it’s true that people with active social lives tend to do better. So, reach out to a friend or acquaintance today!.
