On National Cheer Up the Lonely Day, reach out to Ohio senior citizens!

There is a so-called epidemic of loneliness among Ohio senior citizens that can have serious impacts on mental and physical health. July 11 is known as National Cheer Up The Lonely Day, making it a great opportunity to reach out and brighten someone’s day.

About 25 percent of seniors report feeling lonely or isolated and that can lead to other issues. Loneliness can be caused by loss of loved ones, illnesses, mobility issues and more – but there are things that can be done.

There are reasons to try and combat loneliness among Ohio senior citizens.

Loneliness can impact health, including increasing ailments such as heart disease, dementia and mental illness.

By encouraging social activities, support groups and volunteering in senior communities and spaces, we can help combat loneliness. At Abbington Assisted Living, we pride ourselves on offering a plethora of social activities, events and opportunities for residents to engage with each other and the community.

We have celebrations, play games, visit local restaurants and more!

If you have a senior loved one you haven’t connected with in a while, reach out. You can visit, make a phone call or video chat.

And if you notice your senior loved one seems depressed or anxious, talk to his or her doctor about it – it could be loneliness or some other condition.

Maintaining connections with Ohio senior citizens is critical. Seniors provide a link to our past. Volunteering for organizations like Meals on Wheels or at a local senior center can be a great way to connect with seniors and be part of the solution in helping to end loneliness.
