How to talk to your parents about moving to an Ohio assisted living community

Sometimes, when we visit our aging parents, especially around the holidays, it can
become clear that it is time for them to consider an Ohio assisted living community. It can be a tough
conversation, but one that can improve everyone’s quality of life.
If you notice your loved ones are having some challenges and you are worried about
their well-being, you might be wondering how to approach the conversation.

Here are a few tips for handling this potentially difficult conversation about moving to an Ohio assisted living community:

  1. Be prepared. Before you sit down, make sure you have a list of concerns with
examples. Health concerns, issues with daily activities, memory or balance
concerns, and more are all valid topics.
  2. Educate yourself. Make sure you are prepared not only with examples but with
solutions. Take time to learn about assisted living options in the area. Cost,
meals, activities and more are all things you should consider.
  3. Don’t downplay their concerns. You might be ready to move them in but your
parents might have concerns. Their thoughts are valid and not brushing them
under the rug can deepen the conversation and connection.
  4. Don’t force them into a decision. Sometimes, it’s better to start the conversation
and then let it simmer. Don’t try and force them into a decision during the first
    conversation.
  5. Talk in person. It’s always a good idea to have the conversation in person. If that
isn’t possible, do a video call.
  6. Listen. Remind yourself that you need to sit back and do a lot of listening. This
isn’t a one-sided discussion. Make sure you ask them questions, too.
  7. Plan a follow-up conversation. Make sure you leave the door open for everyone
to digest the information and discussion and then plan to revisit it at a later time.
Unless your loved ones are a danger to themselves or others, it is their decision
when it is time to consider assisted living.

Remember, a short, loving conversation full of empathy and listening will go a long way
toward opening the door to moving to Ohio assisted living community. When you are ready to take the
next step, please consider contacting Abbington to arrange a tour.
