It’s getting hot, hot, hot and while we love summer, the warmer temperatures can mean increased health risks for your senior loved one.
Whether that’s dehydration, heat exhaustion or another seasonal health concerns, it’s important to prioritize wellness during the summer months for your senior loved one.
With a few simple precautions, you can all enjoy the season safely and comfortably.
Here are some health and wellness tips for your senior loved one.
- Stay hydrated. Hydration is one of the most important parts of summer wellness. As people age, the body may not signal thirst as effectively, increasing the risk of dehydration. Seniors should drink water consistently throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty. Fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges, can also help. Limiting caffeine and sugary drinks are also a good idea.
- Beat the heat. High temperatures can place added stress on the body, especially for people with chronic health conditions. If you have a senior loved one, try to keep them indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between late morning and early evening. When spending time outside, wear breathable lightweight clothing, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. And take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces.
- Exercise wisely. Seniors need to stay active during the summer to help maintain strength, balance, and overall health. But to avoid overheating, make sure they are exercising during cooler morning or evening hours and taking frequent breaks.
- Eat the rainbow. It’s always important to eat a balanced diet and it’s even easier in the summer, when fresh fruit and veggies are at their peak.
If you have a senior loved one, it’s important to pay attention to symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, fatigue, headaches, or nausea, which may indicate heat-related illness or dehydration.
By staying proactive and practicing healthy habits, everyone can enjoy a safe, active, and healthy summer season filled with fun, connection, and wellness.
